How to Create a Social Media Marketing Plan

October 1, 2013

Social-Media-IcoSocial media shouldn’t be your only marketing strategy, but it definitely needs to be at the top of the list. Because so many people use social media, there is a very large audience of people to reach by using sites like Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, Tumblr and others. Here are some ways to start developing your social media marketing plan for optimum results.

Choose Your Social Media Sites

You don’t have to use every single social media site out there, to help brand your business. In fact, by focusing on only a few of them, you are able to dedicate more time and effort to these important ones. You can choose the ones you feel have your target audience, which may be Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, Google+, Tumblr or even some of the bookmarking social media sites, such as Reddit and StumbleUpon.

Know Your Audience

Get to know your target audience so you know which sites they tend to frequent. For example, Pinterest has more than double women than it does men, while more men are using Google+, as opposed to Facebook. Younger audiences are on Twitter and Tumblr, while the older generation tends to use Facebook more than any other social media site.

Set Goals

You should also ask yourself what you are hoping to accomplish by using social media. Are you trying to find a place to announce new product lines, get followers and fans, improve business networking, or find similar businesses to collaborate with? There are many reasons your business will be using social media, so it helps to define your goals and ambitions before you create the plan.

Select a Social Media Manager

Regardless of he size of your business, you are going to need help maintaining your social media accounts. It is time consuming with everything involved, even though it isn’t difficult. Unless you have several hours a day to dedicate to social media, you should have at least one or two people dealing with social media for you. This person needs to be familiar with how the different sites work, help you get fans and followers, start contests, engage others in conversation, share interesting stories and articles, and promote your business.

Update Often

Instruct your social media manager to update often and with diverse content. You definitely want to avoid doing nothing but promoting your own business, without interacting with others and sharing their content. Your social media profile should stand out as being different, revolutionary and even entertaining. Take notice of some of the biggest social media presences out there, such as Taco Bell. They have started Retweeting funny statuses mentioning their restaurant chain on Twitter, which is working incredibly well for them. Find what works for you.

Your social media marketing plan should include deciding on the best social media networks for your target market, finding someone experienced with social media to manage it for you, and making sure to update frequently and with the right content.
