September 30, 2013
As of September 2013, Tumblr had 216 million visitors each month and over 132 million blogs. In May of 2013, Tumblr had 5.5 billion page views in that month alone. With these stats, you already know you should be using Tumblr for business. But how? That is best explained when looking at what Tumblr can do for you, as a brand. One thing to keep in mind is that Tumblr lets users share anything, including text, photos, video and animation, quotes, links, music and just about anything else. While technically a “blogging” platform, it is also a social media platform, providing many benefits that Twitter and Facebook just don’t have.
After signing up for your Tumblr account, which should use your business name if at all possible, you will need to get your feet wet. Tumblr is unlike any other platform, so take some time to learn how to properly use it, and how others use it. You will find a search feature to look for other blogs, as well as recommended blogs. This is important because when you follow others, they tend to be more likely to follow you. It is very simple to use once you get a hang of it.
Use Tumblr Tools
There are a number of different tools for Tumblr that let you blog from anywhere, and you want access to these. Install the Tumblr bookmarklet in the browser of your main computer, and the apps for your tablet or mobile phone. This lets you follow, like, share and post from anywhere. Tumblr is a very fast moving site with users being active all day long. You want to be able to keep up. With these tools, it is also easy to share things you find on other networks, like Twitter or Pinterest.
Like and Reblog
If you need more followers to get your business account running, start following others. Keep your demographic in mind when you choose who to follow, and “like” and “reblog” their posts as often as you can. Choose things relevant to your business and industry to be interesting to others who follow you. Not only does this create more participation and draw attention to you, but it helps you participate in current trends which is important on Tumblr.
On Tumblr, everything is found through tags. You have to tag your posts with relevant and interesting tags, that are not too broad. Most people will find Tumblr blogs through the search function, which requires all of your posts, whether text, image or video, to have the right tags.
Like all other social media sites, Tumblr is more effective when you are active. You should be posting, following, liking and reblogging every day. Preferably multiple times a day to keep up with people you are interested in following. This helps you find current trends so you can tailor your posts to these trends and get found more easily.
Tumblr is a user-friendly blogging interface combined with a very active social media network. For your brand, it has multiple possibilities.
