Why Can’t Google Find My Videos?

Video SEO What Is A Video Sitemap

An Article by Dennis O’Brien

video sitemapHere is another Article from my blog that I want to share with you here.  It is very relevant to the subject of this website and covers many of the elements to be considered in the planning of any Video Marketing Campaign.

A video sitemap is relatively new term for most of us and basically refers to how you markup or embed video in your posts or HTML documents on your web site. Your site map will do the rest of the job as long as you cover this aspect.  Most would be used to simply uploading to a video hosting site, aka YouTube.

YouTube formats the video according to the “rules” of video site maps during the upload process.  But what if your not comfortable with YouTube giving your viewers the added choice to leave your page via their play list when your video ends. Or that too often mistaken click that transports you straight to YouTube itself.

Of course there are other choices besides YouTube for your hosting but that comes as an extra cost if you have a large volume of videos.  The only alternative is self hosting and that’s where the SEO element enters the equation and you have to begin thinking how Google or any other search engine might find your video content.

We’ve already covered the use of content rich titles and meta tags, or if you haven’t you might like to read a previous post first 10 Tips On Creative Video Marketing. Now we’re faced with the task of leaving a trail for the search engine “sniffer dogs” to follow.  Enter Google Webmaster Tools.

Creating Your Video Sitemap

There are two methods you can use to embed video in your posts or HTML documents on your web site to accommodate search engines.  One they name the Facebook Share method and Yahoo! SearchMonkey RDFa. Using either (or both) of these formats to mark up video directly in your HTML helps Google better understand and present your video content. To help Google discover video markup on your pages, make sure the markup appears in the HTML without the execution of JavaScript or Flash.

You can also tell Google about your video content by creating and submitting a XML video site map.    For most of us who have become dependent on WordPress plugins Google have come to the rescue with yet another called Google XML Sitemap for VideosHowever click on this link and see a great example  http://www.labnol.org/sitemap-video.xmlIt’s available as open source GPL via your WordPress Dashboard.  Here is a video on how to create a sitemap like that in the example after installling the plugin.

There is another version for images if you’re a photographer as well or depend on volumes of images for generating traffic to your site, Google XML Sitemap for Images.

Do I need a Video Sitemap

Well I suppose you need to consider your direction and the importance you place on video.  Do you envisage expanding your video library to a size where you need a video sitemap?  In my last post Should YOU Stop Blogging Too? I touched on the subject of where your heading with your blog and this may be the time to consider some of the issues mentioned.  Our blog may be our personal “intellectual carriage” but it is definitely not the be all and end all of our Business as such. Anyway simply put it’s your choice whether you actually need a video sitemap or not.

Coding A Video Sitemap

If you don’t mind a challenge and you want to create your own video sitemap without taking on another plugin you can copy the page source in the example created by the plugin above. You can find the requirements for the sitemap in the table of contents found via the Facebook Share method and Yahoo! SearchMonkey RDFa links under the heading Creating Your Video Sitemap above.  Don’t be put off by the expanse of the coding as much of it may not be needed if you study the tables. If you look at the source code of the example you can see what I mean by duplicating the code.

Once the file is created it becomes a matter of updating the file with your URL and creating the thumbnail which is an essential element.  In a post I created earlier Add Some Style To Your Posts I gave you a link to free a text editor. That program will save your XML files for uploading your video sitemap and you can keep a copy on your PC for easy editing.

So I hope you find this article helpful in explaining a video sitemap and how it is an essential tool for correct SEO for your self hosted video content.  Please share the article if you find it helpful and let me know your thoughts or if you use a video sitemap already

Glad you liked it. I visited your site as well. I must say I’m intrigued that you don’t use Social Sharing for readers to recommend your site. I would have gladly shared to Twitter and Facebook.
